Wyoming bolsters roster with aim to rise in Mountain West

Wyoming is starting fresh with new coach Sundance Wicks and new faces on the court. Most players on the Wyoming roster exited through the transfer portal or ran out of eligibility last year, leaving five returning players for this season. 

Levi Brown, Nigle Cook, Oleg Kojenets, Cort Roberson and Kobe Newton return to Wyoming this season. This poses a challenge to Wicks, who is coming into his role as head coach. Wicks filled his roster with talent from the transfer portal and incoming freshmen. 

This is a look at the fresh faces on the Cowboys’ roster:

#3 A.J. Wills – Sophomore Guard 

As a freshman, Wills appeared in 22 games playing for Holy Cross in Massachusetts. The 6-foot-2 guard shot 36% from the 3-point line in 16 minutes per game. Wills became the sixth transfer to sign with Wyoming after the coaching change. 

#5 Obi Agbim – Senior Guard 

Obi Agbim enters his senior year after a string of transfers. Agbim spent two seasons in Fort Lewis with the Skyhawks, as well as one season with Northeastern Junior College and Metro State. He was named the RMAC Tournament MVP while recording 33 points in the championship. 

#7 Matija Belic – Junior Forward 

The forward from Serbia enters his junior year with the Cowboys. Belic spent two seasons with UC Santa Barbara before transferring to Wyoming. At Santa Barbara, he shot 44% in 52 games. He has played internationally for Serbia at the U16, U17, U19 and U20 with the International Basketball Federation in Europe. 

#8 Cole Henry – Graduate Forward

Cole Henry comes to Wyoming from Iowa after spending four years at Northern Iowa. Henry has one more year of eligibility that he will use playing for Wicks this season. He has appeared in 104 games in four seasons, shooting at a rate of 54.6%. 

#9 Abou Magassa – Redshirt Freshman Forward

Aboubacar “Abou” Magassa hails from Morsang-sur-Orge, France, where he played for Chorale Roanne Basket in Roanne, France. In France, he shot 70% on 2-pointers and 36% from the 3-point line. Magassa redshirted for the Saint Louis Billikens, leaving him with four years of eligibility. 

#11 Dontaie Allen – Senior Guard

Dontaie Allen of Kentucky came out of high school with 21 offers from NCAA Division I schools, including offers from Power Five schools. Allen committed to the University of Kentucky in high school and began his career there. In 2021, he was named the SEC Freshman of the Week. Allen transferred to Western Kentucky and then to Wyoming the following season. 

#12 Scottie Ebube – Junior Center

Scottie Ebube is a center from Illinois. He has two years of eligibility going into his junior season with the Cowboys. Ebube spent three years with Southern Illinois, appearing in 31 games last season, shooting 69% in the field. 

#14 Garrett Spielman – Freshman Guard/Forward

A Wyoming native, Garrett Spielman graduated from Sheridan High School. He comes to the Cowboys as a freshman after earning first-team All-State awards for golf and basketball. He also played in the Wyoming All-Star series against Montana.  

#16 Jordan Nesbitt – Senior Guard 

Jordan Nesbitt joins Wyoming after three transfers from Memphis, Saint Louis and Hampton University. Nesbitt has scored over 1,000 career points as he enters his final year of eligibility with Wyoming. As a freshman at Memphis, Nesbitt was a four-star recruit and a preseason Sports Illustrated All-American. 

#22 Jehvion Starwood – Freshman Guard

A four-star recruit from Illinois, Jehvion Starwood was recruited by Wyoming, Illinois State, Southern Illinois, Miami (OH), San Jose State and Denver. Starwood was the No. 15 prospect in the state of Illinois and the No. 42-ranked guard in the 2024 graduating class. 

#25 Touko Tainamo – Senior Forward

Touko Tainamo is from Helsinki, Finland. He played for Denver University for three years before transferring to Wyoming. Tainamo scored 517 points last season at Denver, appearing in 98 games with 82 starts. He was also a member of the Finland national basketball team for the U18 and U20 European Championships.
