Primo Spears: UTSA’s scoring leader thrives in new home

Primo Spears has quickly made a name for himself at UTSA. The 6-foot-3 guard, who played for Duquesne, Georgetown and Florida State, continues to prove himself as one of the most dynamic scorers in the country. Averaging 19.7 points per game, Spears ranks 23rd nationally in scoring and drives the Roadrunners’ offensive success.

A naturally gifted scorer and playmaker, Spears arrived at UTSA with over 1,100 career Division I points and more than 300 assists. He consistently creates for himself and his teammates, displaying confidence and skill throughout the season.

“The pace we play at really allows me to thrive,” Spears said. “As a point guard, getting out fast in transition and having the freedom to make plays has been a perfect fit. Plus, my confidence is at an all-time high.”

Spears significantly improved his 3-point shooting, increasing his percentage by nearly 8% from last season to 34.6%. He credits his work with the coaching staff for this development.

“It’s really just about confidence,” Spears said. “I’ve spent a lot of time in the gym with the coaching staff, and they’ve helped me trust my shot more. That’s made all the difference.”

Spears chose UTSA largely because of first-year head coach Austin Claunch. Claunch’s energy and enthusiasm in recruiting stood out to Spears, and that same energy now fuels daily practices and games.

“Playing under Coach Claunch has been great,” Spears said. “He’s the youngest coach I’ve played for, and he brings energy every single day. I never had that at my other stops. He made it clear during recruiting that he believed in me, and that’s meant a lot.”

Spears has navigated a unique college journey, playing for four different schools in four seasons. Although adjusting to new teams and systems posed challenges, he believes each experience shaped him into the player he is today.

“It’s definitely been a roller coaster,” Spears admitted. “Having a big role on different teams has helped me grow. There was a learning curve at Georgetown and Florida State, and I played for a Hall of Famer in Patrick Ewing. It was tough, but now I’m in a position to lead again.”

As the season enters its final stretch, Spears focuses on clear goals. Personally, he wants to improve his shooting percentages to showcase his efficiency. More importantly, he aims to lead UTSA to an American Athletic Conference championship to secure the NCAA Tournament automatic bid.

“I just want to keep getting better,” Spears said. “If we stay locked in, we can make a real run at the conference title and get to the tournament. That’s the goal, and I will do everything I can to help us get there.”
