New Mexico has moved into the top spot in the latest Mid-Major Basketball Power 20 after its three-point victory over Utah State on Sunday. It marked the Lobos’ second victory over Utah State this season and extended their winning streak to eight games. The Lobos (22-4, 14-1 Mountain West) sit atop the Mountain West Conference standings.
While college football follows a clear structure with automatic-qualifying and non-qualifying conferences for the College Football Playoff, the term “mid-major” in basketball is more subjective. For clarity and consistency, MidMajorBasketball.com defines mid-majors as teams from conferences outside the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC and Big East.
