Former St. Bonaventure guard Melvin Council Jr. has committed to Kansas, he confirmed on Instagram.
In his one year as a Bonnie, Council Jr. averaged 14.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. He was a spectacular defender, averaging 2.1 steals per game. His play landed him a spot on the Atlantic 10 third-team list. This season comes after one year at Wagner, where he averaged 14.9 points per game and led all of the NCAA in minutes at 35.8 per game.
Council Jr. was the team captain during his one year at St. Bonaventure, being a vocal leader on and off the court.
After talking with multiple schools once entering the portal, his top schools were Kansas, Mississippi State, Georgia Tech and Georgia.
The news of Council Jr. entering the transfer portal shocked the St. Bonaventure faithful after initially stating he would return next season.
“I know people are going to try and throw me a lot of money, but I’m not in for the money. I’m in it for the culture, fans and family. I just want to talk with my mom and my dad. I do feel like the best thing is to come back and play another year at Bonaventure… I fell short against VCU. I just want to give it back to the community and try to win the A-10,” said Council Jr. after the Bonnies NIT loss to Kent State.
Council Jr. will provide a spark to a Kansas team that went 21-13 and lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Arkansas.
