Matas Vokietaitis is a key player for Florida Atlantic

Matas Vokietaitis has become a significant piece for Florida Atlantic, showcasing his skills with aggressive rebounds and strong finishes under the rim. Vokietaitis’ consistent efforts have made him a valuable asset to the Owls.

The 7-foot freshman center from Lithuania has been a standout player for the Owls this season. Dominating on both ends of the floor, averaging 9.4 points and 5.2 rebounds a game, and shooting 69.9% from the field goal.

“I am trying to improve every day, trying to be better. I try my best, and that has led to the success I have right now,” Vokietaitis said.

Vokietaitis has demonstrated notable growth at the free-throw line. He is shooting 63.6% overall this season. But in Florida Atlantic’s five-game winning streak, he has made 19 of 25 attempts for 76%. Drawing the foul under the rim and finishing at the line has been instrumental in the Owl’s success this season.

“I started shooting more free throws in practice, after and before and individual workouts. That was the key to shoot better,” Vokietaitis said.

In the Owls’ most recent game against Temple, Vokietaitis earned his conference best-fifth freshman of the week honor after knocking down 6 of 7 field goals in 14 minutes of play. He scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

“I am always trying to do my best, I do not care whether I start or if I am coming off of the bench, I always try to play hard and be focused,” Vokietaitis said. “I am always prepared to be in the game.”

Vokietaitis has adapted quickly to the transition from European to American basketball. Under coach John Jakus’ guidance, he has grown into a confident player, discovering the areas of his game where he excels the most.

“When I came here to visit, they made me feel like family. They were very warm and showed me everything and how they would use me,” Vokietaitis said. I knew I would like this program, and that’s why I chose to come here.”

Jakus and the coaching staff at Florida Atlantic have played a key role in Vokietaitis’ success. Utilizing his height to influence both ends of the floor has created success for the Owls.

“Sometimes his basketball style reminds me of European style, but also American. I think it is a little bit similar,” said Vokietaitis on Jakus. “I have nothing bad to say about his style.”

The Owls are riding a five-game winning streak, with Vokietaitis playing a crucial role in their success. He brings energy off the bench with his powerful paint touches, thunderous dunks, and relentless rebounds. His dominance on both ends of the floor has paved the way for the Owls’ continued success.
