Dayton has climbed to the top spot in the latest Mid-Major Basketball Top 25 following a statement eight-point victory over then-No. 6 Marquette on Saturday.
The Flyers (9-2) have built an impressive non-conference resume, highlighted by an 18-point rout of then-No. 2 UConn and a hard-fought five-point win against a strong Northwestern squad, in addition to Saturday’s win. Dayton’s only losses came in tightly contested matchups against elite competition, falling by two points to then-No. 12 North Carolina and by five to then-No. 5 Iowa State.
While college football follows a clear structure with automatic-qualifying and non-qualifying conferences for the College Football Playoff, the term “mid-major” in basketball is more subjective. For clarity and consistency, MidMajorBasketball.com defines mid-majors as teams from conferences outside the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC and Big East.
